Wanted: DAY CAMP COUNSELLOR

The Indian Point Young Naturalist Club is seeking a 2020 Summer Day Camp Counsellor. Candidates would need to exhibit the following qualities: demonstrate responsibility in many situations, self-motivator, ambitious, proven leadership skills, collaborative and cooperative teamwork skills, a desire to learn, to help children and have passion to inspire each child’s awareness, knowledge and appreciation of natural places in an outdoor setting on the shores of St. Margaret’s Bay.

Qualifications of a Camp Counsellor include:

1.    Completion of at least grade 10.

2.    At least one year's experience working with youth.

3.    Emotional maturity, good character and integrity.

4.    Enjoyment of the out-of-doors.

Responsibilities of a Camp Counsellor include:

1.    Provide leadership and guidance for day-campers ages 5 to 15.

2.    Participate with staff team in planning and carrying out camp program.

3.    Cooperate as part of staff team in working together for the well-being of the camp and campers.

4.    Help set and carry out the daily routines.

5.    Supervise and participate in water activities.

6.    Participate in all training activities that are required by the camp administration to assist with skill development and camp procedure including time for pre-camp preparation and orientation.

Assets for Camp Counsellor Job include:

1.    First aid and CPR Training.

2.    National Lifeguard Service Award.

Looking for new IPYNC Campers for 2020!

Hi everyone:

I pleased to announce that we are looking for new campers and that Lily Shakespeare, camper for many years and last years art counsellor,  has accepted the position of senior counsellor with the IPYNC 😊  

We are now about 80 percent full in camps with returning children from last year.  If you would like to register your child or you have family or friends who may like to register, this is a good time to get a spot in camps this summer.

We are still looking for art and senior counsellors, so please let me know of students,  aged 16 plus,  to join in on the fun this summer.  I have wished  for the pat 16 summers that I could have had a summer job being a camp counsellor when I was a student stacking motor oil at Canadian Tire 30 years ago - circa 1990!

Finally,  I would be remiss I  didn't mention what is on our minds -  the spread of Covid-19.  I find though, I  am also often thinking of the Italians singing from their windows brighten each others spirits and the heart warming stories of neighbors leaving gift cards by the doors of friends in my community, I am encouraged that we have the resolve and kindness to get over the pandemic together as we follow the World Heath Organizations recommendations https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public

2020 I.P.Y.N.C dates Announced!

Hi there:

It’s a snow day here in St. Margaret’s Bay.  There is a wind, tidal surge, freezing rain and rain warning in place, so there’s no better time to think warm thought of summer.  Spring is right around the corner and another exciting Summer for the Indian Point Young Naturalist Club won’t be far behind!



With about an 80% return rate, I want to make sure everyone who attended camps in 2019 has a chance to attend a camp(s) again this summer before new campers are registered.  Now’s your chance to pencil in your children to make sure they receive a spot in this summer’s camps.

We've created a list of children who want to join for this summer.  If you would like to look at the dates below and let me know if there is one that fits in with your summer schedule, I will put your child (or children 😊) on the waiting list.  I will open registration up to new campers in April and will contact you.
Here are the dates of the 2020 camps (drumroll please 😊).



Camp 1 for 5-12 years of age will run from Monday July 6^th to Friday July 10^th, 2020


Camp 2 for 5-12 years of age will run from Monday July 20^th to Friday July 24^th, 2020


Camp 3 for 5-12 years of age will run from Monday Aug. 3^rd to Friday Aug. 7^th, 2020


Camp 4 for 12-15 years of age will run from Monday Aug. 17^th to Friday Aug. 21^st, 2020



The 2020 camp registration form and the names of this summer’s counselors will be released during March Break.

White Shark Adventure and Essay Contest

Hi everyone:

The Indian Point Young Naturalist Club is very excited for the opportunity to join the OCEARCH team on Monday September 30^th and again on Friday, October 4^th as they attempt to catch and tag White Sharks from their ship M/V OCEARCH off Lunenburg Harbour.  OCEARCH help scientists collect previously unattainable data in about white sharks. 


The I.P.Y.N.C can take children ages 10 and above.  Three children on September 30^th and two on October 4^th.  We’re sure, even being a school day, that many will want to join this once in a lifetime adventure! 


This is an exciting and unique invitation for the I.P.Y.N.C, however, only 5 spots are available.  To be fair in awarding a chance to see a giant White Shark, there will be an essay contest.  Essays will be judged by OCEARCH founder and expedition leader Chris Fischer and his team from the OCEARCH ship.

Essays will be developed by answering this:

Why does  it matter if millions of sharks are killed each year?

The essay needs be a minimum of:

-         200 words for children 10 to 12 years of age.

-         300 words for children 12 to 15 years of age.

Closing date for the contest is midnight on Sunday, September 23^rd.
